Sacky Gebia, a towering gentleman from the Western Province standing 3 meters tall, recently experienced an incident that showcased his calmness and composure. Despite being a police officer, he found himself in a situation where he could have arrested a crew driving that vehicle, who lacked the legal qualifications to drive. He is the head pastor of my church in the Southern Region and also serves as a senior officer with the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) based in Port Moresby/NCD.
The incident occurred earlier this month when Pastor Gebia and his wife visited a shopping mall in Waigani. After completing their shopping, they decided to walk home. As they approached the bus stop, they waited for a couple of buses to arrive before crossing the road. When a bus came to a halt, they crossed behind it, as there were other buses nearby.
Unexpectedly, the bus driver stepped off the bus for a break, and the crew, unaware of their surroundings, began to reverse the vehicle. The bus struck Pastor Gebia twice from behind. Remarkably, he was unharmed. He calmly stood up, held his wife’s arm, and continued walking home.
Pastor Gebia is highly respected in my church community for his calmness, wisdom, and decisiveness. When I asked him how he managed to stay so composed during the incident, he explained, “I was at peace and chose not to take any action. If I had, it could have escalated the situation, and who knows what might have happened as people seized the opportunity to further their own agendas.”
He recalled how he and his wife remained calm despite the crowd yelling at the driver, expecting him to take action. Instead, they chose to walk home peacefully.
After our meeting yesterday, I chatted with Pastor Gebia again. I took his hand and placed it next to mine, remarking, “You see, pastor, your hand is twice as big compared to mine. If you had put your hand on that crew’s neck, he could have suffocated. But who knows, if that happened, it might have been for the better or worse. Maybe even arrested him too!”.
Fortunately, in his wisdom, Pastor Gebia managed to handle the situation calmly, which could have turned serious for the driver, the vehicle owner, and the public who witnessed this incident.
